Trivia time #17

In which film did two different actresses play one character (and not as two different ages, i.e. the child and the adult), as opposed to the more usual convention of one actress playing two different characters?

This is one of the actresses.

Trivia time #16

In which film does an obviously stuffed bird attack a scantily-clad Jeetendra, and why does it attack him?

trivia16.jpg

Our winners are Nithin and Aspaan, who knew that it’s the film Nagin (1976) and Jeetendra is a snake (in man form) and the bird wants to eat him! A truly baaaaaad film as you might expect, but good fun nonetheless.

Trivia time #15

These screenshots show an actress and an actor who play husband and wife in this film. Who are they, and what is the name of the film (hint: the actor plays the title character)?

trivia15_3.jpg

trivia15.jpg

Our winner is Shweta, with a big assist from v9y and Carla. I thought this was a difficult one, but guess I will need to try harder!

The movie is Halaku (1956). Pran plays Halaku, a Mongol conqueror of Iran, who falls in love with Meena Kumari. This doesn’t go down well with his wife (Veena) or Meena’s beloved (Ajit, in one of his early hero roles, before he became a stock villain). The music by Shankar Jaikishan is beautiful, and Helen and Minoo Mumtaz have a dance together too!

Trivia time #14

Can anyone tell me who this lovely lady is? She was “Maa” in films from the 1950s into the 1980s.

trivia_14.jpg

v9y knew the answer: it is Mumtaz Begum (or Begam). If I had an Indian mother I might want it to be her!

Trivia time #13

I thought of this while writing yesterday’s post. How were Mehmood and Meena Kumari connected in real life?

trivia_mehmoodmeena.jpg

Anonymous UK is our winner today! Mehmood married Meena Kumari’s older sister Madhu, making him Meena’s brother-in-law.

Trivia time #12

What is the name of this actor, and what was his primary profession in the film industry (besides being a villain par excellence)? (Beth is ineligible to answer, because she already knows :-)

trivia_eleven.jpg

Yay! We have two winners: Bhavna knew that he is Shetty, and Anonymous UK that he was a stunt/fight coordinator for films in addition to being a bad guy.

Trivia time #11

It’s been too long since once of these! Can anyone tell me what these three actors have in common (and who they are)?

trivia_11rn.jpg

trivia_11nn.jpg

trivia_11pn.jpg

Okay, I’m giving up on all of you! :-) I thought at least someone would know who the actors at the very top and bottom are…

In order from the top down, they are Rajendranath, Narendranath, and Premnath; and what they have in common is their gene pool. They are brothers, and all three acted in Hindi movies for decades. Premnath began working in the 1940’s as a hero (and even for a while had a relationship with the gorgeous Madhubala); he went on to become a very busy villain, acting into the early 1980’s. Rajendranath was a very popular comedian/sidekick especially in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and continued working into the 1990’s. Narendranath was not as prolific as his older brothers, but found fairly steady work through the 1970’s to the 1990’s.

Trivia time #10

In what movie is the whole story of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” enacted as a play, starring Helen as the wicked Queen? Bonus points if you can tell us who plays Snow White!

sad_dwarves.jpg

Okay, nobody even has a guess! The movie is Baazi (1968) starring Dharmendra and Waheeda Rehman (who plays Snow White in this segment). The movie is okay, but this play within the movie is fabulous. It’s about 15 minutes long—and ends with a Helen dance, of course! It’s worth seeing on its own.

Trivia time #9

In what film did Dilip Kumar play not one, not two, but three different characters?

trivia_9.jpg

v9y is our winner! The movie is Bairaag (1976). Dilip plays a father who goes blind; when twin sons are born to him and one of them is blind, he leaves that son at a temple and keeps the sighted one. Of course, this is a bad decision, as the blind son grows up to be a good person, and the sighted one is not and treats his father with disrespect. Dilip’s wife Saira Banu costarred, and Helen had a small role as well.

Trivia time #8

Name this character actor (shown here with Dev Anand), who appeared in hundreds of movies throughout three decades of cinema.

trivia_seven.jpg

Sreya is our winner! He is Rashid Khan, and he is ubiquitous in 1950-1960’s movies, especially those with Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor. I would love to find out more about him/his life if anyone can help.
