Trivia time #12

What is the name of this actor, and what was his primary profession in the film industry (besides being a villain par excellence)? (Beth is ineligible to answer, because she already knows :-)

Yay! We have two winners: Bhavna knew that he is Shetty, and Anonymous UK that he was a stunt/fight coordinator for films in addition to being a bad guy.

Trivia time #11

It’s been too long since once of these! Can anyone tell me what these three actors have in common (and who they are)?

Okay, I’m giving up on all of you! :-) I thought at least someone would know who the actors at the very top and bottom are…

In order from the top down, they are Rajendranath, Narendranath, and Premnath; and what they have in common is their gene pool. They are brothers, and all three acted in Hindi movies for decades. Premnath began working in the 1940’s as a hero (and even for a while had a relationship with the gorgeous Madhubala); he went on to become a very busy villain, acting into the early 1980’s. Rajendranath was a very popular comedian/sidekick especially in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and continued working into the 1990’s. Narendranath was not as prolific as his older brothers, but found fairly steady work through the 1970’s to the 1990’s.

Trivia time #10

In what movie is the whole story of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” enacted as a play, starring Helen as the wicked Queen? Bonus points if you can tell us who plays Snow White!

Okay, nobody even has a guess! The movie is Baazi (1968) starring Dharmendra and Waheeda Rehman (who plays Snow White in this segment). The movie is okay, but this play within the movie is fabulous. It’s about 15 minutes long—and ends with a Helen dance, of course! It’s worth seeing on its own.

Trivia time #9

In what film did Dilip Kumar play not one, not two, but three different characters?

trivia_9.jpg

v9y is our winner! The movie is Bairaag (1976). Dilip plays a father who goes blind; when twin sons are born to him and one of them is blind, he leaves that son at a temple and keeps the sighted one. Of course, this is a bad decision, as the blind son grows up to be a good person, and the sighted one is not and treats his father with disrespect. Dilip’s wife Saira Banu costarred, and Helen had a small role as well.

Trivia time #8

Name this character actor (shown here with Dev Anand), who appeared in hundreds of movies throughout three decades of cinema.

trivia_seven.jpg

Sreya is our winner! He is Rashid Khan, and he is ubiquitous in 1950-1960’s movies, especially those with Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor. I would love to find out more about him/his life if anyone can help.

Trivia time #7

Which Hindi film star was first seen in this film, and what is the film’s name? I think it is one of the best Hindi movies ever made.

trivia_eight.jpg

Karishma guessed correctly that it’s a very young Sanjay Dutt on the left; the movie is Reshma Aur Shera (1971) which was produced and directed by Sunil Dutt, who also starred in it. Sanju appeared in a qawwali performance at a fair. I think Philip Lutgendorf’s review is the best one I’ve read on this amazing film.

Trivia time #6

Here is one for the weekend. It’s quite hard—another obscure film which I got because it starred one of my favorites (not telling which though). I often use this as my avatar because it makes me laugh every time I look at it. What film did I capture it from? Hint: this creature kidnaps the heroine:

(It also will definitely get its own post one of these days for its cheesy special effects alone.)

The film is Aaya Toofan (1964), starring Helen and Dara Singh (the wrestling champion). I am probably the only person who has ever seen it. VERY low-budget! It is beyond bad, but the “special” effects are good for many many laughs. Also Helen had oodles of songs and dances, always a big plus for me.

Trivia time #4

Well, people seem to like these little quizzes and I have to confess that I can probably keep them coming for quite a while…as long as my memory (not to mention the OCD) stays relatively stable (so no guarantees).

Here’s another Shammi-related question: In which of his early movies did he play a bad guy who loses the girl in the end (bonus points if you know who the hero was)?

The answer is: Mem Sahib (1956)

Trivia time #3

Since I am still one-armed, screen shots are easier to post than words.

so…in what film did Shashi Kapoor do a nautch-girl number?

how about his brother Shammi (this is basically a freebie)?

Kaddele is today’s winner with the correct answer of Shankar Dada for Shashi and Bluffmaster for Shammi…and she gets bonus points (which are sadly worthless) for her info on Haseena Maan Jayegi—which I will look for immediately!
