My ten favorite Rajesh Khanna songs

rk_katipatang2

Tomorrow (today already in India) is Rajesh Khanna’s birthday. The PR fiasco that his latest film has become notwithstanding, I think that Rajesh in his prime (i.e. during the 1970s) was more fun to watch enacting songs than most actors. He had a knack for music; he collaborated closely with music directors and with Kishore, who is of course “the voice” of Rajesh, and in almost all his films from that period that I have seen the music is really special.Ā

I haven’t included songs from films I haven’t seen, or songs that have appeared in other lists already (like “Rimjhim Rimjhim Dekho” from Shehzada, which would definitely be here otherwise!). Interestingly (to me anyway!) all the songs that made it here are written by either Laxmikant-Pyarelal, or by RD Burman.

Here are my ten favorite Rajesh Khanna songs—to listen to, to watch, to swoon over (although not all of them are romantic)! And janamdin ki badhai, Rajesh! Thanks for all the hours of viewing pleasure you’ve given me and all your fans!

10. “Bemausam Bahaar Ke” from Bundal Baaz (1975) (sung by Kishore and Lata, music by RD Burman). This is on my list for several reasons. First of all, it’s one of my favorite Rajesh roles, in a film made by my beloved Shammi which never got its proper due. It is a cracktastic good time, and makes me laugh until my stomach hurts. One of the goofiest and funniest Hindi films I’ve ever seen, it made me love Shammi even more than I already did (if that’s possible) and gave me a new appreciation for Rajesh’s talents. And the songs are really fun, especially this one—it’s picturized on Rajesh and Sulakshana Pandit, whose romancing is helped along by Rajesh’s genie!

9. “Yeh Public Hai” from Roti (1974) (sung by Kishore, music by Laxmikant Pyarelal). Rajesh and Mumtaz have discovered miserly Jeevan’s stash of hoarded grains, and gleefully lead the townspeople to it as Rajesh sings this mischievously delightful song about corruption and the consequences of it being exposed to the public at large. Hilarious, but pointed—I think this is one of Manmohan Desai’s most complex and overlooked Ā films.

8. “Yeh Kya Hua” from Amar Prem (1971) (sung by Kishore, music by RD Burman). The film is too sad to be a favorite, but I love this song despite it being quite sad as well. Kishore’s singing of this surpasses even his own high standards, and I can listen to it over and over again—and I think Rajesh probably had quite a good time acting out the drunken picturization with Om Prakash.

7. “Prem Kahani Mein” fromĀ Prem KahaniĀ (1975) (sung by Kishore and Lata, music by Laxmikant Pyarelal). Sweet love song with Rajesh and Mumtaz, although their happiness (in this film anyway) is doomed. Sigh. The two of them just always look like they’re having fun together.

6. “Ek Ajanabee Haseena Se” from Ajanabee (1974) (sung by Kishore, music by RD Burman). All of Rajesh’s considerable charm is present in this song as he lets Zeenat Aman know how he feels in front of a crowd of her friends. So romantic! Zeenat herself doesn’t look too shabby. And it’s such a good film too.

5. “Yeh Shaam Mastani” from Kati Patang (1970) (sung by Kishore, music by RD Burman). Rajesh sings about his feelings for Asha Parekh on one of those fabulous Indian picnics where everyone is having way more fun than I ever did on a picnic (ants! too much sun! other bugs! arghh!)…and Rajesh is looking very handsome despite the bright yellow pants handicap.

rk_katipatang

4. “Main Babu Chhaila” fromĀ Chhaila BabuĀ (1977) (sung by Kishore, music by Laxmikant Pyarelal). A lively and fun song, with Rajesh giving Zeenat and jealous, glowering Asrani a ride home in his tonga. Plenty of fun at Asrani’s expense, and the Rajesh-Zeenat magic shines. Gemma loves this one too (the horse)!

rk_chhailababu2

3. “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar” from Aap Ki Kasam (1974) (sung by Kishore and Lata, music by RD Burman). Oodles of fun with Rajesh and Mumu in Kashmir before it all went sour (in the film only as far as I know!). Everybody sing along!

rk_aapkikasam3

2. “Gore Rang Pe” fromĀ RotiĀ (1974) (sung by Kishore and Lata, music by Laxmikant Pyarelal). All the songs from this film are so good, but this one is a favorite because of Rajesh and Mumtaz’s superb chemistry. His teasing and her flouncing gradually turn serious as the rain pours down on them (I could do a whole post on my ten favorite Rajesh Khanna rain songs alone!). Lovely!

1. This could not be any song besides “Duniya Mein Logon Ko” from Apna Desh (1972) (sung by Pancham Da himself and Asha, music by RD Burman). It just doesn’t get any better than this: RD and Asha’s voices, and Rajesh and Mumu in disguise! The backup dancers! The swimming pool with fungus-like lighting! FAB-U-LOUS!

  1. The PR fiasco that his latest film has become..

    Details, please. Which one?

  2. Wafaa, where he “romances” a 20-year-old in horrifyingly lascivious detail. It’s exactly like seeing a shirtless Jack Nicholson pawing a nubile young thing. In other words, not pretty. They should have asked someone my age to star with him, heh heh (and kept us covered up).

But this post is about beautiful and not age-inappropriate Rajesh! Even Jack was…well, he was never as good-looking as Rajesh, but he was young once too.

  3. I haven’t seen any of these films (I’ll get there someday!) but the visuals are gorgeous!

  4. Very well compiled list. Judging from the mood of your list at this moment, I think “Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana” (guest appearance) and “Mere Sapno Ki Rani” might be good fits. I love your choice number 1 selection “Duniya Mein Logon Ko” – R.D. rocks.

  5. Yes, both songs would have made it to the top 20 :) It’s hard to narrow it down to 10, I haven’t seen nearly all his films (hardly any of his 80s work) and I still found it difficult…I vacillated between the Bundal Baaz song and the song from Dushman (“Waada Tera Waada“) for hours. I should have just made it a tie…

Nida: I’d recommend Apna Desh and Chhaila Babu for starters with Rajesh…well, you can read my reviews where they are linked. His first big hit was Aradhana (I know there will be people out there wondering where those songs are) but I didn’t like it that much :(

  6. It is always difficult when you have this self imposed limitation ofjust 10 songs. One should have a list of 20-25 songs at least. There are two three good songs in every Rajesh Khanna movie, and he must have acted in around 50 movies at least.

I also find that Rajesh Khanna did very good roles in 1980s after his superstar crown was gone. And there were some mmorable songs in these movies also. For example- the song “hazaar raahen, mudke dekhin ( Thodi si bewafaai) which earned Kishore Kumar the filmfare award for best male playback singer for 1981 is a great song.

“Hamen aur jeene ki chaahat na hoti” (Agar tu na hote) is another great song. But these songs are serious in nature and as such may not become as popular as happier songs.

  7. What a delightful list! I’d been thinking just the other day that I’d do a list of my ten favourite Rajesh Khanna songs, and yes – Yeh Shaam Mastani featured on that too. Though I did have some other songs that I like a lot: Chala jaata hoon kisi ki dhun mein (from Mere Jeevansaathi) and Zindagi kaisi hai paheli (from Anand), to name just two. But yes, I do think I could go on and on about the Rajesh Khanna songs I like…

    • Also i want to say that even if u see the movies like: Anand, Safer, Aap ki Kasam & Haathi Meri Saathi that too sad scenes I particularly start crying..
That shows his way of acting..

  8. Thanks so much for making the effort to compile & post this list in time for his birthday. I’m sure he’d appreciate it !

Like the others I have many, many favourites, but two come to mind …

The 1st is ‘Mera Sapno Ki Rani’ from ‘Aradhana’. I had always been a fan, but seeing that movie & song cemented it for me. I even got the song played at my marriage.

The 2nd one is ‘Dilbar Jaani Chali Hava Mastani’ from ‘Haathi Mera Saathi’. it starts off as a lullaby for their kid & moves on …, beautiful.

    Take Care,

    Asli Jat

  9. Very Greatful & thanks Memsaab. So beautiful write up on our Super Star Rajesh Khanna. But there still more and many very good songs of our Super Star Rajesh Khanna. Kindly highlight more Memsaab please. Its my my personal request.

ā€¢ Super Star Rajesh Khanna – An actor par excellence
On his sixty sixth birthday on 29-12-2008, I may highlight some inner capabilities of the FIRST & REAL SUPER STAR OF INDIAN CINEMA as a most refined actor, rather, an actor par excellence, which I have experienced for the last four decades through his outstanding performances. These are in addition to his classic facial expressions which emerge effortlessly on his face and the style and arrogance brought by him on the silver screen. The rigorous use of his voice to communicate a characterā€™s lines and express emotion, which he achieved through attention to diction and projection through correct breathing and articulation. It has also achieved by him through the tone and emphasis that an real actor puts on words. Characterization/Physicalisation of a role in order to create a believable character for the audience and to use the acting space appropriately and correctly. Use of gesture to complement the voice, interact with other actors and to bring emphasis to the words in a play, as well as having symbolic meaning.

  10. ā€¢ Acting excellence ā€“ Super Star Rajesh Khanna

A life without the acting excellence of Super Star Rajesh Khanna is a life with no ideals. Unlike others, this exceptional thespian has never used the acting or characteristic themes of a thriller, nor the rudiments of esoteric psychological investigation as a means to a portrayal. Without faltering he has presented the uncovering of the psychic expressions of protagonists as varied as the colours of the rainbow.I perceive that he personifies the ideas of faith, resistance and irreconcilabity to untruths and injustice. I deeply esteem and apprecaite his faith and belief through his charismatic portrayals. Rajesh Khanna is a Lovemark because he is the one of the worldā€™s most consumate actors. He is a human being whose humanistic significance history will evaluate and re-evalute because with a syllable from his golden voice he teaches the world how to forgive and love.

  11. ā€¢ Super Star Rajesh Khanna – The king of all voyages
Super Star Rajesh Khanna whose heart is epic has given what is stronger than the windā€™s longing. The seashores have sung it and sing it still. And shall sing it until the sun goes to sleep and lowers every light. For Super Star Rajesh Khanna is the captain with the endless eyes. He caresses and speaks not with words alone but with his eyes. The North winds have ascribed this captainā€™s cinematic and humanitarian accomplishments. Storms study the sea and spell out his name. Lightning flashes scibble his unmatched stature with white pencils on the backdrop of mountains. Super Star Rajesh Khanna is the one who spells out the messages of time through the mystagogical of his theatrical roots. On screen we see the history of the sea and the effortless building out of sand of the most incredible dreams. Because he has nothing else to do. No space in which to breathe and to spread the endless skein of his hopes. Memory is a longing because time encircles him and he understands it like no one else. The land has no balm nor the mountains air. The sea has no ships for us now. Super Star Rajesh Khanna rhapsodize to us at last of sorrow and of joy for you are king of all voyages.

  12. ā€¢ Super Star Rajesh Khanna – The ultimate true romantic legend
Super Star Rajesh Khanna – the greatest legend and real super star of Indian cinema. There are romantic leading men and there are romantic leading men, but very few have taken cinematic love to legendary heights. While there might be other icons, superstar actor Rajesh Khanna after four decades is the ultimate true romantic legend.

  13. ā€¢ An enduring Lovemark ā€“ Super Star Rajesh Khanna :
Rajesh Khanna is such a perennial actor. With his portrayals and his good works in philanthropy, you can’t help but be touched by this gentleman as an enduring Lovemark. He has set a loving, compassionate example for others to follow. His career is seeing a revival. What a fabulous actor and human being.

  14. Great list memsaab! I love Bundal Baaz too–my favorite song from that one was of him dreaming about beating up your favorite Ranjeet in “Ruk meri jaan” :-) I think Indian audiences only liked to see RK romance and lose the girl or die or preferably both :-) With very few exceptions (such as Apna Desh, Chhaila Babu), all the ones where he’s done fun roles with happy endings like Bundal Baaz, Shehzada, Chalta Purza, Joroo Ka Ghulam, Dil Daulat Duniya, etc. tanked miserably at the BO.

Thanks again Memsaab for catering to the unending insistence of RK fans that you do something for his birthday!

  15. Atul: It would exhaust me to have to choose more! :-) Hard enough to pick ten. I am working on watching more of his films from the 80s because I know he made some good ones then when the spotlight had left him. So maybe next year for his next birthday I will do a list of my favorite songs from those films! :-)

dustedoff: Those two songs were in the running :-) Just so many good ones to choose from…

Asli Jat: That is an excellent wedding song. I didn’t like Aradhana (too sad for me, I think) but the songs were lovely. Just not in my top ten….but probably that song would have made it in the next ten! Along with at least one Haathi Mere Saathi song (it IS Gemma’s favorite movie, after all)…

    V. Manohar: You are welcome and I’m sure Rajesh Khanna would be gratified to know that he has such a faithful and devoted fan :)

Suhan: I always prefer “fun” films. Although romance when done right (Rajesh, Shammi, Dharmendra) is so gratifying too. But my Cardinal Rule Number One for movies is that my hero should NOT DIE. I had a difficult time picking the song from Bundalbaaz :) Such a fun film!

  16. And I just realized that I forgot to point out that Jeetendra has a little cameo in “Yeh Public Hai” that is kind of cute.

I’ve fixed the link to the song (thanks Suhan) so that it goes to Youtube instead of my “Roti” post.

  17. great – i agree that songs from his 1980 movies are also very good – Phir Wohi Raat, Bandish,Aanchal,Kudrat,Dard, Dhanwan, Thodisi Bewafaii, Souten.Avataar,Awaaz, Red Rose, Alag Alag……the list is endless

  18. I have a few of those lined up to watch, I just need more hours in the day :-)

  19. Oh, man, I have so far to go! I’ve seen Red Rose and … uh … Disco Dancer. There’s obviously a big Rajesh gap in my life.

  20. How unusual of you to start with Red Rose (although Disco Dancer was my first look at Rajesh too, and the reason I got so many of his films. I found him totally handsome in it, much more than Mithun)…yes, some of these films are just fabulous. You might like Roti, given your appreciation for the more unusual :) (It’s Manmohan Desai, after all!)

  21. While going through this site about ten favourite songs of First ever Superstar of Indian cinema, I am also listening his Birthday Special on RADIO MANTRA 91.9 FM, the lovely and everlasting classic songs from Kati patang, Anand, Souten, Apna Desh, etc. etc. etc. Thanks Memsab for this beautiful collection.

  22. You are most welcome, Abhijit! A radio program could fill a whole day with songs from his films :)

  23. Superstar Rajesh Khanna with R D Burman and Kishore Kumar is a treat – what music, what songs…….it is a lifetime achievement for a superstar who has not acted in many movies for the last 20 years. Wish him a very Happy Birthday and a prosperous 2009-

  24. Great list memsaab, but no Rafi songs ?.

I’d include a good number of Rafi songs when making a Top RK list, because the quality is just too good.

    Some of them are:

Gulabi Aankhen – The Train (RDB)
Gunguna Rahe Hain Bhanwar – Aradhana (composed by RDB in an SDB film)
Kahe Ko Bulaya – Humshakal (RDB)
Yeh Reshmi Zulfen – Do Raaste (L-P)
Koi Nazrana Lekar Aaya – Aan Milo Sajna (L-P)
Yeh Raat Hai Pyaasi Pyaasi – Chhoti Bahu (K-A)
Akele Hain Chale Aao – Raaz (K-A)

  25. Hi Memsaab

A great list of RK songs. I am beginning to understand your statement about coming across die hard RK fans after reading some of the comments posted here!

RK films usually had very good songs and it is indeed difficult to choose only ten. You have done a great job.

    Happy New Year

    Meera

  26. Yes, when I started with the Bollywood, one of my first thoughts was “There MUST be horror films!” So I found some lists on blogs and ordered movies without really knowing anything about them. Red Rose was among them: an odd, but interesting picture. I’ll definitely have to check out Roti.

  27. Thanks for the list, princeali!

Happy New Year to you, Meera ;-) RK does have very devoted fans!

I haven’t seen Red Rose yet, but am looking forward to it (although horror is not my thing at all)…isn’t it so much fun to just plunge in and order films without having any idea what you might be getting? I love it…

  28. Memsaab

Kamal Hasan acted in the original tamil version of “Red Rose”. He was appreciated a lot in this movie. I think the hindi version of RK was a flop vis a vis the tamil one.

  29. Memsaab

I have seen red rose it is fablous movie of rajesh khanna. I was super hit film not a flop movie.

  30. Haven’t heard Bundalbaaz. And ChhailaBabu. But

besides that, awesome list. I liked Duniya mein on

top spot. Still some are missing from the list

[which is natural, cause ‘kaka’ has great, long list

of great songs]. Here are some…

    1. Kora Kaagaz – title song [the trademark, hey

    hey….aha …hummmm]
    2. Amar Prem – Chingari [ooh…the visuals]
    3. Mere sapno ki raani [legendary train song]

    List is endless.

  31. Anonymous: I had heard that, although I haven’t seen the Tamil version either.

    R. Bagyalakshmi: I guess the hit vs. flop thing is very subjective :-) but I look forward to seeing it myself.

Darshit: It was tough to narrow down to ten, and I’m sure that I forgot some that I’ll be kicking myself for. Kora Kaagaz would def. have made it to the top 20, and probably “Mere Sapno Ki Rani” as well. Thanks for adding to the list :-)

  32. Speaking of Red Rose, there’s one song from there I’d probably include on my personal top 10 (or 20… or 30… or 40…) Rajesh Khanna list: Kiski Sadayen

Besides #1, #2, #3, #5, #6, #7, and #8 I’d probably include the following on my own list as well:
    Rasta Dekhe Tera (Humshakal)
Kitne Sapne Kitne Arman (Mere Jeevan Saathi)
    Ruk Meri Jaan (Bundal Baaz)
Chup Gaye Sare Nazare (Do Raaste)
    Gulabi Aankhen (The Train)
    Aate Jaate Khoobsurat (Anurodh)

As with any list of this sort mine would be changing on a daily basis, there’s just too many great songs on Rajesh Khanna… it’s amazing how many fantabulous numbers have been picturized on him over the years. Happy belated b-day, Mr. Khanna!

  33. Thanks Sy :-) Mr. Khanna did have a great ear for music, no doubt! (and thanks for posting the Bundal Baaz songs on Youtube, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to find them!)…

  34. Great list Memsaab!!
If I have to make one, I guess I’ll have these songs in it:

    – Roop Tera Mastana/Aradhana (too hot!)
    – Raina Beeti Jaye/ Amar Prem (I love his facial expressions and the song is so beautiful…Ayee Anand Babu!)
    – Title song from Mehbooba: great guitar intro, incredible set…
    – Hume Tumse Pyaar/ Kudrat: one of my all time favourite song
    – Goron Ki Na Kalon Ki/ Disco Dancer: I didn’t know he was part of the cast first time I saw the movie…It was a great surprise!

  35. That is the ONLY song from Disco Dancer that I genuinely like (although I love the picturizations of some of the others)…and it was my intro to Rajesh :-)

  36. Got to agree that it is difficult to make a top-10 list of Rajesh songs and not have to exclude some really good ones.

I have not seen Bundal Baaz or Chhaila Babu (I remember they were during the “decline” phase of Rajesh’s career and I studiously kept away from them for fear of breaking the mould of him I had in my happier “o mere dil ke chain” days). This is also the reason why I have seen very few Rajesh movies of the late 70s/early 80s.

But now, so many years later, I think I will venture to see these two movies again.

You have picked cracktastic songs. ;-)
Your top 2 are just brilliant – I would have picked the same 2, if only possibly in reverse order. “Gore rang pe” is just AWESOME for the chemistry between Rajesh and Mumu. I don’t think anybody could have missed it. And all those mannerisms. :-)

I would also have got “vaada tera vaada” in – just a lovely, timepass song.

Others here have mentioned some good songs, among them, “chala jaata hoon” (which used to be one of my favourite songs as a young boy. I would keep singing this one – and “jaane jaa” from Jawani Diwani :-).

Rajesh was well-known for his mannerisms. Till the public got tired of them, they just swooned over them. One song that I like and that could belong here is “Yahan wahaan saarey” from Aan Milo Sajna.

Joroo Ka Ghulam has a timepass song – “aankhon mein kajra hai”.
And Rafi’s “ye reshmi zulfen” from Do Raaste is worth a mention.
And the less-known “daanton taley daba kar honth” (aka ek haseena) from Doli has all the ingredients of a Rafi teaser.

  37. sorry, that should be “nainon mein” from Joroo Ka Ghulam.
    Here it is…a delight.

  38. And here is “daanto taley” from Doli.
To be honest, I like this song more for Rafi’s voice than anything else. :-)
So much life in the voice, it wants to make you dance. :-)

  39. and unless you haven’t seen Aan Milo Sajna, surely this song deserves to be in ?

  40. sorry for flooding you with posts but how about this one ?
gussa itna haseen…Kishore absolutely superb here.
And Rajesh in all his style

  41. Doli was a total “Red Mist” movie for me; I was so enraged by the rampant sexism in it that I couldn’t enjoy anything, not even the songs.

Aan Milo Sajna I need to watch again; it was one of the first Rajesh films I saw and I don’t remember much about it. But that was long ago and I have more appreciation for the songs now than I did back then…:-)

    Thanks for contributing your favorites!

  42. Amen to 1, 3, 4, 6 & 7! (I actually haven’t watched those other songs.) The Apna Desh song is actually what made us buy the movie – I’m a sucker for outrageous 70’s extravaganzas.

I’m not a huge Rajesh fan, but I’m liking him more as the years go by…I was mainly upset with him stealing the limelight from Shammi, but I guess I have to let that go sometime!

  43. Congratulation Memsaab for producing a top 10 list for RK.

For all these years as a Rajesh Khanna fan, I still cannot figure out a list. I guess I love a lot more than just 10.

I agree about Ek ajanabee, Gore rang pe, and Yesh Sham mastani being there…of course.

But you missed Andaz, Aap ki Kassam songs, Safar songs, Maryada, Kudrat, Mehbooba, Do Raaste, Premnagar, Raja Rani songs, Mehboob ki Mehndi, Aan Milo Sajna, Raaz, Anand songs, 2 others besides “yeh kya hua” from Amar Prem, Your “bhegi-bhegi” rain song & “Ham do no do premi’ train song from Ajanabee, Aradhana songs, Pyar diwana hota hai & Jis galiman from Kati Patang, Haathi Mere Saathi songs, Palkon…Southen, etc…etc…

    Wow! I cannot even start.

I congrats you to even have a list!

  44. ….and have you heard Mere Jeevan Saathi??? A lousy movie with great songs?

There are at least 3 or 4 songs to be considered….

    1. Diwana leke aaya hai http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1LsfjN-N6I&feature=PlayList&p=218852DA6A6CE9E8&playnext=1&index=40
    2. Oo Mere Dil ke Chain

    3. Kitne Sapne Kitne Arman
    4. Chala Jata houn

  45. Aimee: Am totally with you on the Shammi thing! I think that’s what kept me from liking him for a while, felt like a betrayal :-)

radzi: I doubt that any two top ten RK lists would be the same, there are just toooo many good ones as you point out (and yes, even when the film was bad the songs were usually good)…

    Thanks for the links!

  46. Memsaab & Aimee,

Rajesh Khanna did not replaced Shammi…..they were different in style and preference.

Rajesh Khanna helped gave Shammi Kapoor his last jubilee hit by taking a supporting role in Andaz while Rajesh was at the top of his superstardom. That was a great favor.

Then, the favor returned….when Rajesh Khanna was losing his superstardom, Shammi Kapoor picked him to star in Bundabaaz; one of the only two films ever directed by Shammi Kapoor?

  47. RK did a recent interview on the occasion of RD Burman’s death anniversary on Jan. 4th. Here’s the link to it–interesting insights. He says his favorite RD songs (in his movies) are:

    – Oh Mere Dil Ke Chain (Mere Jeevan Saathi)
    – Chingari Koi Bhadke (Amar Prem)
    – Zindagi Ke Safar Mein (Aap Ki Kasam)
    – Duniya Mein (Apna Desh)
    – Humein Tumse Pyar Kitna (Kudrat)

    http://www.mid-day.com/specials/2009/jan/040109-RD-Burman-15th-death-anniversary-Rajesh-Khanna-reminiscing-Play-Bollywood-Playback-Singers.htm

    • Suhan:

Thanks for the interview link of RK about RD. They had close affinity including with Kishore Kumar and they just created magic, again and again. Also RK and Mumtaz had such great screen presence together..omg, their rain songs are simply …rainable and singable

  48. radzi: I know he didn’t replace Shammi :-) and they didn’t buy into the media hype about competition between them either, apparently—which is a good thing! And I love Rajesh in Bundalbaaz.

Suhan: Great article, thanks :) At least we have one favorite song in common (Duniya Mein)!

  49. Memsaab,

I am glad we are in good terms about the Khanna and the Kapoor relationship especially when Rajesh snagged away Dimple from the Rishi Kapoor jodi. Else the would had been at least 3 or 4 more “Bobby” like movies with them together in 1974.

I understand that you preference of happy go lucky and masala types films and songs. BUT….can you do us tears jerker fans a favor? Please try to do a top 10 tear jerker songs of Rajesh Khanna.

    Thanks in advance.

  50. Maybe one of these days I’ll be in a tear-jerker mood and do that, radzi :-)

  51. Great listing.Kishore kumar is my favorite singer.I can’t think music with out Kshore. It’s seems to be odd that i havn’t heard the 1st song Bemausam Bahaar Ke so far but right now i have decided to hear it soon.

  52. Memsaab thanks once again on top ten songs. One more suggested. Why dont u pick up top 25 movies of Super Star Rajesh Khanna from Aakhri Khat – 1966 to Kaash..Mere Hote – 2009 and write small write up on each movie please.

  53. V Manohar, you are killing me.

    :)

  54. Memsaab now u r my fan. Its request of my fan pls.

  55. Great List!!!!.
Dont see my favourites though………”Kahin Door Jab Dhin Dal Jaye” from Anand and “Kuch Tho Log Kahenge” from Amar Prem….
Anand has another Gem….”Meine Tere Liye hi Saath Rang ke sapne chune”…You wont feel that you are watching the movie but you will feel you are sitting along with Ramesh Deo, Seema and Amithabh watching Rajesh perform the song……

  56. Hi Heyman, thanks for adding your favorites! There are many great songs not on my list, simply because I limited it to ten :) (or I might still be writing this post!)…

  57. i want to ask about the name of his film when he act as a blind and he love his doctor and she treated him
    please answer me
i wish i know the name of the songs in this film and get it.

    • Hi memo: I asked my go-to girl on all things Rajesh, and here’s what she had to say:

      (i) He is ‘psychiatric case’ (not blind) and falls in love with the nurse (Waheeda Rahman) who cares for him in “Khamoshi” (1969 or 1970) a b/w film with an absolutely superb musical score from Hemant Kumar–all the songs were huge when it came out and are still much loved.

(ii) He is a doctor married to Sharmila Tagore who isn’t blind but prone to epileptic convulsions in “Chhoti Bahu” (1971) with one swoon-worthy Rafi number and a rather nice bhajan. Kalyanji Anandji I think. Someone said (I’m not sure though) that it’s based on a Bengali short story by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee (of Devdas fame).

(ii) He is in love with a doctor (Moushumi Chatterji) in “Bhola Bhala” (1978) but is not blind :-)

(iii) He is a doctor in love with Kim who’s thought to be a “case” but not blind in “Phir Wohi Raat” (1980). Again great songs by RD Burman.

(iv) Again he’s a doctor in “Bandish” (1980) with Hema and neither are blind. Again great songs by LP. I think I should stop saying great songs because that seems to be the norm with his films regardless of the MD.

      (v) He is blind in Dhanwan (for a while) but in love with the widow (Reena Roy) whose husband’s (Rakesh Roshan) eyes were donated to him. So was Kaka wearing greenish lenses in this ?:-) Don’t know :-( Haven’t got it, haven’t seen it, isn’t available ANYWHERE except on the UK street. And don’t know anyone who can get it for me from there either as these are retailers (but not online sellers). Ok kinda music. LP I think. Very popular especially two of the songs but they do don’t do much for me.

(vi) In “Hum Dono” (1985) he is a doctor in one of the double roles but no one there (Hema and Reena Roy) is blind. I just got my new copy of Hum Dono and will rewatch. It’s a comedy :-) remake of one of Kamalhasan’s big hits, didn’t do well in Hindi but I liked it the first time I saw it. It’s got some really nice numbers, RD again. EXCEPT for one disco eyesore where he looks HORRIBLE!!!!

Hope this helps! And on a side note: if anyone knows how I can get my hands on a copy of Rajesh’s Dhanwan, please let me know!!!! :)

    • I think you are referring to “Mere Jeevan Saathi”. I haven’t seen all that many RK movies but I think this is among his best. Songs are great–O mere dil ke chain and Kitne Sapne Kitne Armaan. Lots of masala too–Helen and her whip and more.

From Suhan’s post it looks like O mere dil ke chain is RK’s favorite too. In fact, RK and I have a more or less 100% match on the songs.

  58. I just stumbled on this post about Rajesh Khanna’s songs, and … what can I say? I need lots of time – to listen to all the songs all over again, at night, after every one has gone to bed and I have only the hum of the dishwasher to keep me company! It is a great list, as expected, but it would probably be greater still if you had expanded it to 20 or 25 songs – what can i say? I am greedy, as always! I was looking for a couple more songs like “Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye …:” from Anand, the iconic “Mere sapnon ki rani …” from Aradhana (which was when I first flipped for him!), and of course, “Zindagi ek safar hai suhana …” from Andaaz. Then I would also want “Jis gali mein tera ghar na ho balma …” from Kati Patang, “Chingari koi bhadke …” from Amar Prem, “Zindagi ka safar …” from Safar, and “Ab chahe maa roothe ya baba …” from Daag, and … you see what I mean!
That was an unbeatable combination – Rajesh Khanna, RDB and Kishore Kumar! And those were the days! Every time I read one of your posts, you remind me of those wonderful days when I was absolutely infatuated with first, Shammi Kapoor, then Rajesh Khanna, in short, I love these posts which send me back to my teen years and my college days! Thanks, thanks, thanks!

  59. Good List. My top 10 would be

    1) woh shaam kuch ajeeb thi – Khamoshi
    2) Mere Sapnon ki rani – Aradhna
    3) Yeh jo chilman – Mehboob ke Mehndi
    4) Zindagi ka safar – Safar
    5) Kahin Door Jab dil – Anand
    6) Yeh jo mohabbat – Kati Patang
    7) Zindagi ek safar – Andaz
    8) Chingari koi badke – Amar Prem
    9) Mere dil me aaj kya hai – Daag
    10) Humhe Tumse pyar kitna – Kudrat

  60. Memsaab, Dhanwan was a big hit for RK. i think Reena Roy was the heroine. Did i manage to find a DVD?

  61. can you make a list of your favourite shammi kapoor songs

  62. Aargh! Why are there not more blogs like this where proper discussions on Indian music can be had? YouTube is full of people eulogizing the music/movie and labelling it with ever longer superlatives, or with people indulging in long arguments about nothing.

    I. Need. More. Lists! Like this!

    • Well, there are probably a lot of lists out there of Rajesh songs that people love and none of them can ever be definitive. But it is nice to find like-minded people who can agree happily to disagree, and to just generally celebrate the bounty we are lucky to have :)

  63. bade afsos ke saath kehne pad rahe hai ki hamare bich nai rahe rajesh ji in ki atmaa ko shannti pardan kare.God Bless you

  64. RIP … Rajesh Khanna

  65. Love your posts! Ok this is ‘your’ fav Rajesh Khanna Songs List but as u sharing it with the world u got to expect comment so, where r:-

Yeh jo mohabbat hai (Kati Patang)
    Mere Sapno Ki Rani (Aradhana)
    Roop Tera Mastana (Aradhana)
Woh Sham Kuch Ajeeb Thi (Khamoshi)
Mere Dil Mein Aaj Kya hai (Daag)
Mere Dil Ki Chein (Mere Jeevan Saathi)
    Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli (Anand)
Yeh Jo Chilaman hai (Mehboob Ki Mehndi)
Jis Gali Mein Tera ghar (Kati Patang)
    Yeh Reshmi Zulfein (Do Raaste)

Wonderful Songs & Compositions all of them, timeless & magical, capturing the essence of the phenomenon yet your list doesn’t feature any of the above…shocking!!

  66. With due respect to a man who came like a hurricane and went like a tsunami, I must say that the word FLUKE must have existed for him. I only liked him in Ittefaq. In style he was just a very poor copy of Dev Anand and in acting of Dilip Kumar. I would like to share an interesting incident about his image. I was sitting with a book binder as I am connected with book publishing and I have this bad habit of asking workers about their past and present filmi heroes. One worker when asked about Rajesh Khanna enquired me about him and was surprised that how people of my generation digested him. I just agreed with him and said I was not one of them.

  67. I am also a fan of Rajesh Khanna
Even today when see the film like: Anand, Haathi mere saathi & some sad scene i start crying immediately.
That shows the old days movies

  68. Arvind’s comment is childish.

Rajesh khanna was & remains the biggest superstar & he calls him a copy of Dev Anand?

C’mon, man, give me a break.

Dev anand could barely act save for 1 or 2 films like guide & Hum dono where he was passable.

Rajesh came like a hurricane but did not leave like a tsunami, rather stayed at the top for close to 30 yrs. He had 11 releases in 1984 & 13 releases in 1987 when amit supposedly was the superstar.

Arvind Guleria’s comments show how ignorant he is of hindi cinema.

  69. memo:
The film in which Kaka is blind and in love with the doctor who treated him could be Mere Jeevan Saathi.
In MJS Kaka is temporarily blind and is treated by the doctor (Tanuja) who was in love with him.

  70. Aww…I love the song Duniya Mein but I have to confess I am very, very partial to the more melancholy songs and films featuring RK. In terms of the relatively upbeat songs – I am very fond of Vada tera Vada but that’s also possibly because he carries that song with such swag (also he looks delicious). But, as a child, I remember the kind of aura that surrounded (or at least it did in my mind) the song Zindagi ek Safar and Shammi Kapoor’s Chahe Koi Mujhe jangli kahe.

I definitely went through a Shammi Kapoor phase and love his interviews but in my mind there are similarities between the two. When I watch songs like Nazar mein Bijli (Prince) and Kahin na kahin, kabhi na kabhie (Kashmir ki Kali) and then an RK song like Mere Sapno ki Rani (Aradhna) I do think Shakti Samant may have something to do with it. But yes, I could watch Mere Sapno ki Rani, over and over again and not be able to take my eyes off of the screen.

  71. Really appreciate your sensibilities..they are different from mine but so refreshing. I’ve never completely confessed to having been a RK fan, until recently. I always thought of it as a bit embarrassing.

    • Agree with the sentiments expressed about Rajesh Khanna & those songs-zindagi ek safar, mere sapnon ki rani….my personal favourite being yeh jo mohabbat hai. What timeless magic Kishore Kumar & him created not to mention with his special leading ladies, Sharmila & Mumtaz. I can understand the comparisons with Shammi Kapoor although I think Rajesh Khanna had that extra special ā€˜somethingā€™-a sincerity that connects with the audience that the chosen few have…the multi-talented gorgeous Sridevi also had this gift.

  72. A very good list indeed but I would like to trouble you a bit and say that I would personally like mere sapno ki rani to be in this list… Anyway it’s my own opinion please don’t mind
