The soundtrack to my life (with Shammi)

Ramsu issued me a challenge to post the soundtrack of my life’s events using only music from Shammi’s black and white movies. I have done my level best, but plizz to remember that 90 percent of my life (so far) had passed by before I discovered any Hindi movies, let alone dear Shammi. So I did cheat a little bit.

And if the lyrics don’t seem to fit the occasion, well, what do I know? I don’t speak Hindi. I have included links to YouTube videos where there is one! Update: I’ve added audio files where there’s no video available. Enjoy!

Best present ever

My friends David and Sarita gave me this recently for no other reason than that they knew I would love it! And I do. I really really do.

Curiosity

I was in NYC this week, and this was the view from my hotel room of Ground Zero (the World Trade Center location). Very busy! And noisy (especially at 7 am). Click on the photo to see it much bigger (it’s a composite, obviously, and not a terribly professional one, but you get the idea). Just thought it was interesting what a hive of activity it is compared to the last time I was there in February, although it still mostly looks like a big mess.

The PATH trains to/from New Jersey have been running for a few years now, but the rest of it has mostly been silent and pretty empty. I guess the memorial site is well underway now!

Mamma Mia!

The best Hindi movie that isn’t in Hindi and isn’t a movie!

I saw the Broadway production of “Mamma Mia!” in New York City this week. It was sublime. In the traumatic days of my teenage years, ABBA was a saving grace, so I’ve been wanting to see this show for some time. I was not disappointed; afterwards, I felt as though I had sat through an incredibly good Hindi movie—with the bonus of knowing the songs and lyrics!

For a cold rainy day

I once had a Russian boyfriend who was depressed pretty much all of the time. On one of those perfect April days—when the sun is spreading its warmth, flowers are exploding into life, and birds are chirp-chirping away—to cheer him up, I said: “Well, spring is coming!”

And he said: “Yes, again.”

True story!

The Last Legion (2007)

ll_aurelius.jpg

The man above is the reason I watched The Last Legion. I adore him. Almost as much as I love Shammi. I didn’t expect much from the movie itself, and was not pleasantly surprised. Colin Firth injected some badly needed tongue-in-cheek humor, and was his usual eye-candy self; the film, I am sad to say, was predictable, melodramatic, cliched and really, really bad. But it had one—no two!—things besides Colin’s presence that I enjoyed, including—Aishwarya! She totally kicked ass.

My favorite not-Hindi movies

Although I have largely abandoned western films in favor of Hindi ones, there are some that I still sometimes get a yen to watch. Over the Thanksgiving holiday I saw The Incredibles again (in spite of being surrounded by Patels, go figure). It got me thinking about my favorite movies from my life Before Bollywood. This is my list of those non-Hindi movies—the ones I suddenly have to see, which I’ve owned on VHS and DVD and will own on whatever medium comes after DVD as well. I watch them again and again (sometimes back-to-back), and they never fail to entertain me. And please know that I realize, as one of my nieces would say, that a couple of them are pretty “sketchy” if not downright BAD.
